Mowool in Maypole (6070) takes an unusual approach to British wool, using the character and length of the fiber to create a light, airy yarn with the visual softness more commonly associated with mohair.
Mowool is made from 100% brushed British wool. The fibers are worsted spun before being brushed, creating a soft halo around the yarn while retaining the natural advantages of wool. British wool's inherent crimp and elasticity help the fibers recover through wear, while the air held within the structure provides natural insulation.
The long fiber length is particularly important here. Once brushed, it produces fabulous bulk without corresponding weight, giving Mowool its distinctive combination of loft, warmth, and lightness.
At approximately 257 yards in a 50g ball, there is a remarkable amount of yardage for such a visually substantial yarn.
About the Maypole Colorway
Maypole is a deep red, but Mowool's brushed halo gives the color considerably more dimension than you'd expect from a conventional solid yarn.
At its core, the shade reads unmistakably as red. Across the fuzzy surface, however, the fine brushed fibers catch the light differently and can give the yarn a softer, almost pinkish cast in places. The effect doesn't make Maypole a pink yarn. Instead, it gives the deep red a luminous outer layer that changes subtly with the light.
That combination of saturated color and airy halo makes Maypole particularly appealing for pieces where the yarn itself can provide much of the visual interest.
Why Mowool Is Different
Mohair-like yarns are often built around mohair or alpaca fibers to achieve their characteristic halo. Mowool creates a similar visual effect using British sheep's wool.
