A Season of Thoughtful Giving: My 2025 Pisgah Gift Guide

One of the greatest gifts my parents gave me was an appreciation for the thoughtfulness behind a gift, whether it was a physical present or simply a kind word. The simple fact that someone took the time to think of me showed how much they cared.

Christmas has always been special in our family, just as it is for so many people throughout the world. It’s a time of togetherness and remembrance. Now that Mama and Daddy are gone, I often reflect on the gifts I received over the years. My all-time favorite wasn’t the most expensive. In fact, it cost only twenty dollars when I received it on Christmas Eve of 1989.

Mama and Daddy always put thought into their gifts. It wasn’t the item itself that mattered; it was the consideration of the person receiving it. I was a Tar Heel through and through. Mama managed to work through her contacts until she found someone connected to the UNC basketball office. She sent a UNC hat to them and had Dean Smith sign it.

I have never put that hat on my head. It still sits in the same box where Mama placed it 36 years ago. I treasure it, not only because it’s signed by the greatest coach to ever live but because my parents spent months working behind the scenes to create that memory for me.

Hand-Dyed Yarn

We recently started carrying select hand-dyed yarns from some of the best studios around the world. For those who knit or crochet, working with premium merino wool is an experience they can’t get from mass-produced yarn.

We now offer “Shawl in a Ball,” a variegated yarn made from wool raised in the Rockies, milled in North Carolina, and dyed in Massachusetts. One skein makes an entire project.

We also carry sock-weight and DK-weight yarns in color blends you won’t find in big box stores. My favorite is called The Eye of Sauron. I’m a huge Tolkien fan, so having a hand-dyed yarn named after the main villain in his epic novel is thrilling. This colorway comes in sock weight.

Book Nooks

I absolutely love book nooks. I grew up loving fantasy, especially The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The thought of opening a door into a magical world captured my imagination.

A book nook is a wood puzzle or model that becomes a portal into another world when placed on your bookshelf. Many include lights and create the illusion of endless depth. It’s a magical gift for the book lover or fantasy fan in your life.

Diamond Art

I haven’t tried Diamond Art yet, but Carl swears it’s one of the best crafts for calming the mind and relieving anxiety. We carry licensed kits such as Mickey Mouse, Nightmare Before Christmas, Care Bears, and Harry Potter.

Paint by Numbers

We recently began carrying Winnie’s Choice Paint by Number sets from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their kits range from original artwork to recreations of famous works like The Scream and Starry Night.

The kits include everything except stretcher bars, which we offer as an add-on. For a budding artist who wants to paint without investing in lots of supplies, these make an excellent gift.

Needlepoint

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a craft explode in popularity like canvas needlepoint. These designs are hand-painted and stitched with hand-dyed silk or wool floss.

We carry Vineyard Silk and Pepperpot Silk in our studio, along with canvases ranging from traditional to delightfully whimsical. For the needlepoint lover in your life, we can build a full project bag with everything they need. They’ll be ready to stitch from the moment they open it.

Crochet, Knitting, and Felt Kits

Our crochet and knitting kits from Hardicraft in the Netherlands are among our most popular items. Each kit includes everything needed (knitting kits do not include needles).

The yarn is super soft — perfect for little hands. These kits are great for crafters who enjoy creating dolls or amigurumi animals. Or you can make the doll yourself and give it to a special little one.

Stocking Stuffers
